Independent/Supplementary Prescribing (V300) Structure

Overview of the Main Content

The design for the NMP V300 structure is derived from the indicative content suggested by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018) the General Pharmaceutical Council (2010), and the Health and Care Professions Council (2013).  

 The regulatory bodies have identified the following 8 areas of indicative content:

·         Consultation and decision-making

·         Influences on and psychology of prescribing

·         Prescribing in a team context

·         Update on relevant aspects of basic and applied therapeutics

·         Principles and methods of monitoring

·         Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to prescribing

·         Legal, policy, professional and ethical aspects

·         Prescribing in the public health context

Structure

The module is offered at Level 7, with students being awarded 40 academic credits on successful completion of the module. The module is delivered over a period of six months. There are 12 teaching days, with students attending LSBU in blocks of two consecutive days a month, alongside specific timetabled blended learning activities. There are three additional days for the case presentation assessment and the pharmacology exam. A minimum of 90 hours of supervised clinical practice is required, of which, 30 hours must be spent under the direct observation of the DPP. 

The module content is delivered equally through classroom teaching, practice-based learning and interactive on-line study.  There are five assessments consisting of 

  • Calculation Exam (100% pass mark)
  • Pharmacology Exam (80% pass mark- assessed as pass/ fail) 
  • Case presentation (pass/fail)
  • Portfolio (multiple graded and also has pass/fail elements)
